Prisoners has an emotional complexity and a sense of dread that makes for absorbing (and disturbing) viewing.

Much of "Prisoners" is rather ridiculous (despite the fact that it clearly wants to be taken super seriously), and there's an overwrought quality to much of the acting, but it's still somewhat effective.
