In 1974, Todd Bowden arrives at the doorstep of elderly German immigrant Arthur Denker, accusing him of being a wanted Nazi war criminal named Kurt Dussander. The old man initially denies the allegation, but eventually acknowledges his true identity. Rather than turning Dussander over to the proper authorities, Todd asks to hear highly detailed stories about his crimes, having recently become interested in the Holocaust.

A Review of Stephen King's Apt Pupil
Both characters become increasingly degenerate as they (re)explore their mutual inner darkness. Todd Bowden is one of the most unlikable characters I have ever encountered in fiction. In him we witness the evolution of a sexual sadist, psychopath. This is triggered by his discovery of magazines about the Holocaust in a friend's basement, and continues to develop during his callous friendship with Denker/Dussander. Denker.
